What is the RILS Housing
Hotline?
The hotline is a program designed to allow individuals with housing
problems quick and streamlined access to RILS housing experts.
How does the Hotline Work?
If you have a housing problem, call the hotline! 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Monday through Friday.
You will talk to a RILS housing advocate who will screen your problem,
provide legal advice and materials, or schedule a full intake appointment
for you.
Who is eligible for the
Hotline?
- You are a U.S. citizen or eligible alien
- You meet Rhode Island Legal Services' income
guidelines
- You have a housing-related problem or question
You should call
the Hotline for advice if:
- You received a 5-day rental demand notice but
have not received court papers,
- Your landlord wants to raise the rent,
- Your landlord won't make repairs to the
apartment,
- Your landlord has abused his right of access
to the apartment,
- You have questions about your lease,
- You have questions about your right to have a
pet,
- You have questions about your security deposit
rights,
- Other housing questions or problems
You
should call and ask for an appointment with a housing advocate if:
- You have had your utilities shut off by your
landlord
- You have been locked out of your apartment
- You have been evicted from your apartment but
have not yet moved your belongings out
- You have received court papers, a Notice of
Noncompliance, or a Termination Notice
- You have been denied admission to a federally
subsidized housing program
